What are the Four C’s of diamonds?

The Four C’s of diamonds are cut, color, caret weight and clarity. Let us clarify them for you.

Diamond Cut:

A good cut enables a diamond to make the best use of light. A fully cut diamond has 58 facets, which are small, flat, polished surfaces cut into a diamond. When a diamond is in proper proportion, light is reflected from one facet to another and then dispersed through the top of the stone. Diamond Color:

A diamond is the only stone which the absence of color makes the stone more valuable. A colorless diamond acts as a prism to form a rainbow of colors, commonly called “fire”. The information below shows the diamond color range from colorless to a degree of yellow tint. Below is GIA standard of grading diamonds.

D, E & F – Colorless

G, H, I & J – Near Colorless

K, L & M – Faint Yellow

O, P, Q & R – Very Light Yellow

S, T, U, V W, X, Y & Z – Light Yellow

Diamond Carat Weight:

Diamonds can be found in all shapes and sizes. The size of a diamond is determined by its weight in carats. A carat is divided into 100 points, so a diamond of 75 points is .75 carats or 3/4 of a carat. Larger diamonds are rarer and command a higher price. While size is an obvious factor in determining the value of a diamond, bigger in not necessarily better. All four C’s should be considered.

Diamond Clarity:

Most diamonds contain inclusions. Inclusions are natural birthmarks and considered nature’s fingerprints on the diamond. A diamond’s clarity is determined under 10 power magnification by a trained eye, taking into account the number, size, type and location of the inclusions. The fewer inclusions in a diamond, the more valuable it is. Grading information stated below.

Derived from the Latin word aquamarines, meaning seawater, aquamarine is known as the gem of the sea. It was believed to keep sailors safe and guard against storms as well as bring hope, health, harmony and happiness. March’s birthstone, aquamarine is also the recognized gift for the 18^th wedding anniversary, believed to reawaken love, kindle friendships and elevate the spirit. Gem of youthful outlook, aquamarine glints the fresh young-at-heart qualities of those who wear it.

Sister to emerald and a member of the beryl family, aquamarine is known for its range of serene, oceanic shades from pastel to medium light blue-green or light green to a deep blue. Even aquamarine’s blues have a green tinge. The color of aquamarine can be quite intense in larger sizes, while it is often less vivid in smaller ones. Differences in shade and depth of color have an effect on its value. A gem that is a deep blue and void of internal birthmarks is considered most valuable.

Aquamarine is routinely heated to remove yellow components. To clean aquamarines use warm soapy water and a soft brush. Mechanical cleaners are generally safe. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals. Ask your jeweler for details regarding special enhancements and care.
